Presenter: Niaz Khadem
IThe presentation offers a sequence of virtual and paper-based activities that grows in complexity. It was used to teach high school social studies and science to multilingual newcomers, many of whom were students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE). Consistent sequencing helps newcomers to be clear about expectations as content changes from lesson to lesson. The use of both virtual and paper-based activities helps students avoid tech-fatigue and maintain engagement. The set of online tools includes Quizlet, Blooket, Kami, Kahoot, and Google Forms. The set of paper-based tools includes vocabulary notebooks, dry erase boards, worksheets, dictation notebooks, and workbooks. The presentation will be of interest to secondary and middle school teachers serving multilingual SLIFE newcomers.
